Storia di sette giovani emarginati di Derry, nel Maine, che si autodefiniscono il Club dei Perdenti. Ognuno di loro è stato escluso dalla società per un motivo o per l'altro; ognuno di loro è bersaglio di un branco di bulli del posto; e tutti quanti hanno visto materializzarsi le proprie paure inconsce sotto forma di un antico predatore muta forma, che non possono fare altro che chiamare "It". Da quando esiste la loro città, Derry è terreno di caccia di questa entità, che emerge dalle fognature ogni 27 anni per cibarsi del terrore che scatena nelle prede che ha scelto: i bambini. Facendo gruppo durante un'estate orribile ma esaltante, i Perdenti si compattano per riuscire a sconfiggere le proprie paure e fermare la serie di omicidi iniziata durante una giornata di pioggia, quando un bambino, nel tentativo di recuperare la sua barchetta di carta, viene risucchiato all'interno di un tombino, finendo dritto tra le braccia di Pennywise il Clown.
